Essential Points on This Form

What is the Georgia MV-1S form used for?

The Georgia MV-1S form is an application for obtaining an original or replacement salvage title for a motor vehicle. This form is essential for individuals who own a vehicle that has been declared salvage due to damage or other reasons. It allows the owner to officially document the vehicle's status and is a necessary step before selling or transferring ownership of the salvage vehicle.

What fees are associated with the MV-1S form?

When submitting the MV-1S form, there are specific fees that must be paid. The fee for an original title is $18.00, while a replacement title costs $8.00. Additionally, there is a State Title Ad Valorem Tax (STAVT) based on the fair market value of the vehicle. To calculate this tax, multiply the fair market value by 1%. Payments should be made via check or money order made out to the Department of Revenue.

How should the MV-1S form be completed?

The MV-1S form must be completed in its entirety without any alterations. It should be typed or electronically filled out and printed, or it can be filled out by hand using blue or black ink. The vehicle owner(s) must sign the form. If the title is to be mailed to an attorney-in-fact, the “Mail To” section must be filled out, and an original power of attorney must be attached to authorize this mailing.

What information is required on the MV-1S form?

Several key pieces of information are required on the MV-1S form. This includes the vehicle's identification number, year, make, model, body type, fuel type, odometer reading, and color. Additionally, the owner's full legal name, date of birth, and driver's license number must be provided. If there are multiple owners or liens on the vehicle, that information should also be included. It's crucial to ensure all sections are filled out accurately to avoid delays in processing.

What are the consequences of not obtaining a salvage title?

Failing to obtain a salvage title before transferring ownership of a salvage vehicle can lead to serious legal consequences. An owner who attempts to transfer a salvage vehicle without first securing a salvage certificate of title may face misdemeanor charges. Penalties can include fines of up to $5,000. Therefore, it is imperative to follow the proper procedures to avoid legal issues when dealing with salvage vehicles.
